President Truman today condemned the mass deportations by the Rumanian authorities of thousands of Jewish and non-Jewish inhabitants of Bucharest and other cities to unknown destinations for forced labor service.
A delegation composed of representatives of various Rumanian group in this country presented to the President a report stating that in Bucharest alone about 200,000 inhabitants are scheduled for deportation in “a purge of genocidal character.”
The President told the delegation that he believes that eventually the present regime in Rumania will “pay for it.” The deportations, he said, were “far worse than anything that can take place in actual open warfare.”
