President Truman conferred this morning with Acting Secretary of State Acheson, Secretary of War Patterson and Secretary of the Treasury Snyder, members of the Cabinet Committee on Palestine.
Earlier the President received a delegation of ten New York Congressmen, led by Representative Emanuel Celler, who made a strong plea against the British “partition” plan and for the admission to Palestine of 100,000 Jewish refugees. They pointed out that the Arabs had already rejected the proposal, and indicated that it would be similarly rejected by Jewish leaders.
President Truman is understood to have reiterated his sympathy and, while giving no indication of his attitude on the partition proposal, made it clear that he was still trying to secure agreement to his demand for admission to Palestine of the 100,000 refugees.
The President also has under consideration a proposal to broaden United States immigration laws by provision for entrance into this country of a larger number of displaced persons from Europe than is possible under existing law.
