The construction of an inter-faith shrine in Philadelphia in commemoration of four Army chaplains of the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths who died in the sinking of the troop transport Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943, has received President Truman’s endorsement.
The President has promised Rev. Daniel A. Poling, father of one of the chaplains, that he would send a message to a dinner December 15 commemorating the shrine. The Jewish chaplain was Alexander Good of York, Pennsylvania. The chaplains died after giving their life preserver belts to soldiers who were without them.
