Truman Lashes out at Religious and Race Bias; Urges New Laws to Strengthen Civil Rights

President Truman said today that “there is no justifiable reason for discrimination because of ancestry, or religion, or race or color.” He told a conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that the government must become “a friendly, vigilant defender of the rights and equalities of all Americans.” He pointed to the need for stronger laws to guarantee civil rights.
