President Truman today signed a fair employment practices order which would prevent discrimination against members of minority groups in the hiring of employees by firms carrying out government contracts.
The order prohibits discrimination based on “race, creed, color, or national origin.” It provides for the creation of a Committee on Government Contract Compliance made up of six members who will be named later, in addition to representatives of the Department of Defense, Department of Labor, Atomic, Energy Commission, General Services administration, and Defense Materials Procurement Agency.
