President Truman today received Frank L. Weil. president of the National Jewish Welfare Board, who presented to him the latest edition of “Fighting For America” which records the contributions of Jews in the United States forces on all fronts.
In a statement released to the press, Mr. Weil pointed out that “victory was made possible only because Americans of every race, creed and color contributed their utmest to victory.” He urged similar unity to “guarantee a successful post-war America.”
“American soldiers of the Jewish faith have been an integral part of our armed forces,” said Weil. He stated that 127 Jewish man have each won from ten to twenty-nine medals; that over half of America’s rabbis volunteered for service in the chaplaincy; and that almost three out of every five Jewish physicians under forty-five are in service.
