Former President Truman said last night he was convinced that Israel is here to stay whether or not the Arab states like it. Mr. Truman made his comments on a nationwide television program.
Speaking of his part in the establishment of the State of Israel, the former President said he had no regrets for his action and described it as simply helping to carry out a promise given the Jews many years ago by the British in the Balfour Declaration.
Mr. Truman said he visualized the development of the Arab lands of the Middle East as great agricultural countries with Israel as the regional industrial center serving the Arabs with its industry. He expressed the belief that an Arab-Israel peace would eventually be achieved despite Arab “demagogues.”
