Jewish families, provoked immediate protest on the part of both Moslem and Jewish communities. The Bey of Tunis, nominal ruler of the State under the French administration, cabled a protest to the French Colonial Office in Paris, pointing out that the measure taken against the German Jews is directly contrary to the Moslem laws and customs of hospitality.
Four of the largest Jewish communities in Tunisia today also cabled their protests to the French Government in Paris.
Deportation of German Jews from Tunis assumed a more serious character towards the end of the day. Ten Jewish families were arrested and deported immediately, without being notified as to the reason.
Protests also have been lodged by the Jewisl community of Tunis with the local French administration. The Jewish community pointed out that the deported Jews were all legal residents and that the physicians had received licenses to practice and had made themselves an asset to the population.
