The Government of Tunisia announced today the recall of its ambassador to Egypt after his residence was set afire this week by demonstrators on the spreading struggle in the Arab world over Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba’s proposals that the Arab states recognize and negotiate for peace with Israel.
Arab student demonstrations against Bourguiba broke out today in Madrid. The Tunisian embassy there was stormed by Arabs shouting “Down with Bourguiba.” At a meeting of delegates from 12 Arab countries in Cairo representatives of the Palestine Liberation Organization submitted a note “categorically rejecting” Bourguiba’s conditions for Arab-Israel talks which provide for the readmission of Palestine Arab refugees to Israel.
Although there have been press reports that the Arab League might expell Tunisia, a League spokesman said here today that none of the member states had raised that issue.
