Rabbi Israel Ichay was officially installed as Chief Rabbi of Sousse at a ceremony today in the Keter Torah Synagogue in Sousse. Present at the ceremony was Aziz Sakka, governor of Sousse, who praised the loyalty of Tunisian Jews to the country and to the Bey of Tunis. The governor also promised equality of treatment for Tunisian Jews.
Replying, Rabbi Ichay and Isaac Hay the president of the Sousse Jewish community, thanked the governor and the Tunisian Government for its attitude toward the Jews and pledged the continued loyalty of the Jewish population. Rabbi Ichay is a well known Talmudist and succeeds Chief Rabbi David Bakobza, who died four months ago.
