Turko-Israeli political ties are “developing fully, ” Prime Minister Ismet Inonu declared here today. He hinted that Turkey may soon resume diplomatic ties with Israel, interrupted seven years ago.
The Premier made the statement about relations with Israel during a news conference at which he was asked questions regarding his Governments attitude toward the recent changes in several Middle East governments. Turkey broke diplomatic relations with Israel seven years ago under pressure from Iraq which was then, with Turkey, a member of the Baghdad Pact. In reply to a question today on the subject, he said that “the organization of legations” between Turkey and Israel “will be developed.”
Asked whether the recent political changes in the Middle East would alter his Government’s policy vis-a-vis Israel, he replied: “Our relations with Israel operate independently, and are not subject to other policies. ” As for the Arab states, he said, Turkey desires better relations with them. “Their efforts to unite, ” he declared, “will not hamper the improvement of ties with Turkey.
