Dr. Raphael Saban, new Turkish Chief Rabbi, was invested at a ceremony at the Neve Shalom Synagogue here attended by representatives of the Vatican, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Armenian Church, the leader of the Moslems in this city as well as the Mayor of Istanbul and representatives of the Turkish Government and military.
The 76-year-old spiritual leader of Turkey’s Jews paid tribute to the Turkish Government’s friendly attitude towards the Jews and pledged to devote him self to the service of his country and the Jewish community. The great synagogue was packed and hundreds of Jews stood outside in a pouring rain to watch the ceremony.
