Turkish Jews took a more active part in the general election yesterday and the campaign which preceded it than at any time in the previous three decades of the existence of the republic.
Three Jews ran as candidates for the Parliament. They were: Salomon Adatto, incumbent and member of the Democratic Party which appears to have won a staggering upset victory; Moise Cohen Tekinalp, member of the Republican People’s Party, up to now the government party; and Daniel Behar who ran as an independent.
The platforms of all parties called for the guaranteeing of full freedoms and rights for all minorities, including the Jews. Mr. Adatto conducted a very vigorous campaign for re-election and a non-partisan survey by a local newspaper established that he would probably run ahead of most Cabinet Ministers in the total number of votes.
