Turkish newspapers have launched a strong campaign for prohibition of public use of all languages except Turkish. The drive is aimed particularly against Ladino, a Spanish-Hebrew dialect used by Jews.
Greeks and Armenians are also targets of the campaign. Although the drive has as yet received no official encouragement in Istanbul, the prohibition already exists in certain towns, including Brusa and Tehirdagh.
Jewish circles said prohibition of languages of national minorities constituted a violation of the Lausanne Treaty.
