Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz pledged to “further the Turkish-Israeli relationship because it is in the interests of all the parties in the Middle East.” Yilmaz made these comments at an Anti-Defamation League dinner in New York, where he received the organization’s Distinguished Statesman Award. Yilmaz also asked American Jewish leaders to serve as Turkey’s “unofficial ambassadors to the world.”
