David E. Lilienthal, chairman of the Tennessee valley Authority, addressing more than 100 Jewish leaders at a luncheon at the Hotel Biltmore, expressed the conviction that the $150,000,000 Jordan Valley Authority project which is now being developed here by the Commission on Palestine Surveys at the recommendation of Dr. Walter D. Lowdermilk, U.S. soil reclamation expert, was “soundly conceived, technically feasible and economically practicable.”
Mr. Lilienthal defined the guiding principles of the TVA and pointed out their possible application in the case of Palestine. He said that the experts at work on the Jordan Valley Authority project include” some of the best and foremost engineers in the world.”
Emanuel Neumann, directing head of the Commission of Palestine Surveys, who president at the luncheon, paid tribute to Mr. Lilienthal’s achievements as head of the TVA and expressed gratitude for the encouragement and guidance given to the commission in its task of elaborating a reclamation and development program for Palestine.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, executive member of the Jewish Agency, said the Commission on Palestine Surveys appointed by Dr. Chaim Weizmann opened a new chapter in Zionist history by utilizing the creative genius and technological and scientific resources of America for Palestine upbuilding. Addresses were also delivered by Dr. Stephen Duggan, Director of the Institute of International Education, and Robert Szold, a member of the Survey Commission.
