Twenty-four young Jews, described by the government as “terrorists and persons assisting terror acts,” were deported last night from Palestine. An official communique said that their expulsion was “in the interest of public property and safety,” adding that the deportees have been placed “in military custody” somewhere outside of Palestine.
At the same time, the Chief Secretary of the Palestine Government sent a letter to the owners of the steamship Transylvania, which is operated by a joint Russian-Rumanian company, warning them that, in accordance with a decree enacted last week, they will be subject to severe penalties if “illegal immigrants” are carried aboard their ships in the future. Forty persons without immigration certificates were discovered among the 1,003 who arrived here aboard the Transylvania last Friday.
The Jewish Agency announced today that its recruiting offices are being converted into centers to deal with the problems of demobilized soldiers, although they will continue to accept enlistments for the Jewish Brigade.
