Two synagogues in Istanbul will close down shortly because the Jewish population of this city has declined so greatly as a result of the immigration to Israel that there are not enough worshippers using the synagogues to warrant their remaining open, it was reported here today.
The synagogues, both of which are nearly eight centuries old, are among the most ancient in Turkey. The religious appurtenances will be distributed among various temples in Turkey while a number of Scrolls will be sent to Israel. Earlier, a number of other synagogues were closed down in Izmir and other Turkish cities because of the emigration rate.
