Two Austrian Jews Win Posts in Buergerschaft

The Lord Mayor, Dr. Richard Schmitz, has appointed sixty-four members of the Buergerschaft, tow of whom are Jews. They are Dr. Jacob Ehrlich, who has been appointed representative of the Vienna Jewish religious community, and Dr. Leopold Langer, president of the Vienna Merchants’ Association, who represents the traders.

Dr. Ehrlich was born in 1877 at Bistritz, in Moravia, and he is a Doctor of Law of Vienna University. Her has been active in the Zionist movement since his youth, and is a member of the Board of the Vienna Jewish Community since 1912, having joined it with ex-Deputy Stricker, as the two first Zionist members.

When the war broke out, he went to the front on July 28, 1914, and served as an officer till the end of the war. He won several distinctions.

In 1919 he was elected to the Vienna City Council. He has several times been at the head of the Zionist Federation of Austria.

Dr. Langer is also closely associated with Jewish life here. He became a member of the Vienna Jewish Community Board in 1906, and served on the board for many years.
