A report that two British Jews had been expelled from Egypt was received here this week-end. The two were Jack Djeddah, a well-known stock broker, and Haroun Ammar, a merchant. The Egyptian authorities refused to give any explanation for the expulsion of the two men.
The same report said that the “position of foreign Jews in Egypt has become more difficult in recent weeks. Some time ago, a special police section of the Ministry of the Interior was assigned to investigate all foreign Jews wishing to obtain exit visas.”
It was also reported that several Jews accused of Communist activity in Egypt are now being held in Cairo prisons. A Jewish printer was arrested recently–and is under detention in the El Tor camp, near the Sinai peninsula–on charges of printing an article criticizing Premier Naguib.
