Two West Bank mayors, deported immediately after the ambush slaying of six yeshiva students in Hebron last May, crossed the Allenby Bridge to the West Bank today to appeal against their expulsion. Fahd Kawasme, Mayor of Hebron and Muhammad Milhim, Mayor of Halhoul, were confined to a VIP room at the Jordan River crossing point while a special appeals board of the Military Government met nearby to consider whether or not to revoke the deportation orders.
The two men will appear in person before the tribunal, as recommended by the Supreme Court. Israeli officials said they would be restricted to the immediate vicinity of the Allenby Bridge unless and until the tribunal and the West Bank military commander decided in their favor. Both expressed confidence that their appeal would be successful.
