Two Druze villages near Haifa were granted autonomous municipal status today at ceremonies attended by Israel’s Minister of Interior Moshe Shapiro. The Minister personally appointed the councillors who will run the affairs of the villages for a period of 12 months, pending municipal elections. About 90 local councils will be set up in Arab villages this year.
