Two former officers of the Nazi SS, the Hitler Elite Guard, were arrested here today on charges of participating in the mass murder of about 30, 000 Jews in the Soviet Union between July 1941 and April 1942.
The men are ex-Colonel Oswald Schaefer and former SS Major Wilhelm Wiebens. West Berlin police who arrested the men here said they were living in West Germany until now under their own names. Both men are accused of having been members of a special SS group, known as Unit No. Nine, which had been assigned by the Nazis to exterminate Jews in East European countries.
