A bomb exploded at noon Friday in a bus on Rehov Herzl, the main artery connecting the Jerusalem bus station and downtown area with outlying suburbs of Belt Hakerem and Bayit Vegan. Twelve persons were injured, including the bus’ East Jerusalem driver, but police said none were hurt seriously. At about the same time a home-made charge went off outside a large shoe shop on Jaffa Road, Jerusalem’s main shopping street. No one was hurt and the only damage was broken glass.
The damage to the bus was extensive. The back part of the roof was blown off and the floor buckled. All the windows were smashed and the seats in the immediate area of the blast destroyed. Police rounded up a number of suspects. In the afternoon, hospital spokesmen said most of the injured had been discharged before the Sabbath and none was in serious condition. Security authorities had asked the public for special vigilance before the Passover-Easter holiday in expectation of terrorist attempts.
