Two Islamic groups are suing a French weekly for reprinting cartoons of the Muslim prophet Mohammed. The cartoons first were printed in a Danish newspaper in 2005, resulting in violent protests by Muslims worldwide, for whom a depiction of Mohammed, particularly a caricature, is offensive. The Paris Grand Mosque and the Union of French Islamic Organizations are suing the satirical weekly Charline Hebdo, saying the cartoons are similar to anti-Semitic acts and Holocaust denial, which are illegal in France. A Paris court will hear the case beginning Wednesday.
