Israel police have arrested two prominent Israel Communists on charges of illegal possession of secret military documents concerning the strength and striking power of the Israel Army, it was reported here today by the press.
The police had kept the entire matter secret, prohibiting publication of news of the arrests, until today when the story was broken by Kol Haam, Communist newspaper, which reported the details and charged that the two men were being held not because they were spies, but because of their political opposition to the government. The two Communists are Uri Winter and Gustav Golubner.
Mr. Winter was arrested during a Communist demonstration against Henry Morgenthau, chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, in the latter part of January. He was released on bail and subsequently rearrested on the present charges.
