Two Israeli soldiers were injured this morning as a result of Jordanian attacks first with small arms fire and later with mortars. The attacks emanated from the eastern bank of the Jordan River near the Damiyah bridge.
Meanwhile it was learned that in yesterday’s exchange of gunfire across the Suez Canal in the Tewfiq area, Israeli forces scored direct hits on Egyptian positions and artillery batteries. The damage was visible from the Israel-occupied side of the canal. It was established that an Israeli tank had scored a direct hit on an Egyptian torpedo boat in the canal, causing it to sink.
(The United Nations made public a cabled report from Lt. Gen. Odd Bull, the Secretary-General’s personal representative on observance of the Arab-Israeli cease-fire, placing blame for the start of yesterday’s clash in the Port Tewfiq area on the Egyptian forces.)
