Two Israeli soldiers were wounded in a seven hour gun duel today between Israeli and Jordanian forces in the northern sector of the Jordan Valley, a military spokesman reported. The main target of the Jordanians was Kibbutz Gesher but they also shelled Beth Joseph and Yardena in the Beisan Valley, the spokesman said.
The shooting was started by the Jordanians at 8:30 a.m. local time and by 11:00 a.m. it had escalated from small arms exchanges to mortar and artillery duals. The Jordanians kept up the barrage intermittently through the afternoon and Israeli units returned the fire in kind. The Jordanians ceased fire at 3:30 p.m. local time, the spokesman said and the Israelis did likewise.
