Two Jewish political prisoners of Palestine who escaped the British internment camp in Eritrea only to be re-interned when they reached Addis Ababa have appealed to the Hebrew Committee of be re-interned when they reached Addis interference according to international law so as not to be handed back to the British,” the Committee announced today.
The announcement said that 279 prisoners, all Palestinian citizens including poets, journalists, editors, publishers, social workers, and party leaders, were deported some 18 months ago to Eritrea where they now exist on “hunger rations and lack medicines.” The International Red Cross, according to the announcement, has always been refused permission by the British Government to visit and investigate the camp.
Getahoun Tesemma, charge d’affaires at the Ethiopian Legation here, has appealed to his Government not to extradite the two prisoners and has forwarded to Addis Ababa cablegrams from Peter H. Bergson, chairman of the ### and Guy M. Gillette, president of the American League for a Free Palestine, asking that the two men be given “asylum and freedom of movement.”
