The George Cross has been awarded to Sergeant Raymond Lewin of the Royal Air Force for rescuing, despite his own injuries, the second pilot of a burning bomber which crashed at midnight on a bombing mission against Italy. The official citation referred to the “superably gallant deed, performed in the dark, under difficult conditions, in certain knowledge that the bombs and petrol tanks would explode.”
Pilot Officer Michael Max Wiseman, son of the well-known Zionist worker, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal.
