Two Jews Killed and Several Wounded when Extremists Clash with Police and Haganah

Two Jews died today and at least five more persons were wounded in a series of clashes between police and extremists and between the dissidents and the Haganah.

The majority of the battles were concentrated in Tel Aviv, opening in the pre-dawn hours this morning with a skirmish between Sternists defacing street signs and a Haganah patrol, during which two of the extremists were captured by the police.

They were released several hours later by a band of their comrades who invaded the Apak police station, armed with sub-machine guns. The invaders, who caused ## damage and no casualties, also carried off a cuantity of arms which were stored in the building.

A Sternist died outside a police station in the northern part of Tel Aviv this evening, when another Sternist attempted to rescue him from a policeman who had caught him posting leaflets. The constable was seriously wounded in the gun duel.

Two other British policemen were wounded, one seriously, in another encounter with the Stern Group, Attempting to apprehend a group of “literature” distributors, the policemen drew fire from the underground members, all of whom are reported to have escaped.

In Jerusalem, a 45-year-old Jewish sergeant in the Criminal Investigation Division, Shalom Gurewitz, was shot dead while seated at home eating lunch by several youths, reportedly Sternists, who invaded his home. Gurewitz is said to have received several threatening letters warning him to give up his police work.

A harmless, but noisy bomb was detonated in front of a Haganah head quarters building in Tel Aviv at dawn this morning in reprisal for the Haganah attack on the street sign defacers. The raiders also fired several shots, but no one was injured. later in the day, a bomb was thrown into the home of M. Herzig, 40-year-old manager of a bus company, who is reputedly a Haganah official.

In the suburbs, Shevach Abner, a 23-year-old youth, was seriously wounded when he was fired on by an armored car which passed him while he was motorcycling.

The Anglo-Palestine Bank in Pardess Chana was robbed of nearly $3,000 tonight by two youths who invaded the premises, subdued two bank officials and ransacked the premises. The robbers are believed to have been extremists.
