Two leading New York synagogues today celebrated the anniversaries of their founding in the nineteenth century. Congregation Rodeph Sholom observed its 120th anniversary at a dinner at the Hotel Astor, while the Park Avenue Synagogue marked the 80th anniversary of its founding with a special program at the synagogue. Senator Jacob K. Javits was the principal speaker at both functions.
Rabbi Maurice N. Eisendrath, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, with which Rodeph Sholom is affiliated, also addressed the anniversary celebration of the Temple which was founded in 1842. Rabbi Louis I. Newman, spiritual leader of the congregation, addressed the dinner.
Among the other speakers at the anniversary assembly of the Park Avenue Synagogue, were Rabbi Judah Nadich, spiritual leader of the congregation and Dr. Milton Helpern, chief medical examiner of the City of New York and chairman of the synagogue’s 80th anniversary committee. Mayor Robert F. Wagner extended greetings to the congregation which also received a message of congratulations from President John F. Kennedy.
