A bill of indictment has finally been completed against Gustav Sorge and Wilhelm Schubert, accused of numerous cruelties and murders of Jews and other prisoners at the notorious Sachsenhausen concentration camp, it was revealed here today. The two former prison guards, returned from a Soviet prisoner of war camp last year, will go on trial next month.
At Bayreuth, scene of the recent trial of Paul Vollrath, one-time Gestapo district leader of Muehlhausen, the state has entered an appeal against a two-year sentence imposed on Vollrath for the destruction of the local synagogue on “Crystal Night,” November 9, 1938 when Nazis throughout Germany, under Gestapo leadership, destroyed Jewish communal and private property.
The state, which charged Vollrath with the attempted murder of Rabbi Moshe Rosenau of the Muehlhausen Synagogue, seeks to reinstitute that charge. The daughter of the rabbi, Mrs. Miriam Falkenstein, came from Israel to testify that she and her mother were stood up against a synagogue wall by Vollrath who then fired two shots at her father, one of which wounded him seriously.
