An appeal by two Norwalk men from a 60-day jail sentence for painting swastikas on the Beth Israel Synagogue in Norwalk has been rejected by the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors.
The convicted men, Harold Fahy and William Arnold, admitted during their trial that they had painted the swastikas on the synagogue on February 1,1960, but sought to have the court view the act as a prank. Fahy is a University of Virginia graduate, Arnold is a German national who was awaiting action on an application for American citizenship at the time of his arrest on the smearing charge. He was raised in Germany during the Hitler era.
