A two-week strike in the diamond industry in Palestine was called off today when an agreement was reached between the representatives of the workers and the employers. The diamond industry is one of the important Jewish industries in the country which has been built up by refugees from Belgium, Hull and Germany. Palestine-cut diamonds are being exported abroad and also supplied the Allies for use in war industries.
Two refugees from the S. S. Patria, which exploded in Haifa harbor in Nov. 1938, with a great loss of life, today filed test claims in the district court here charging that their luggage was lost or stolen either through official negligence or deliberate vandalism. The claims have been filed against the Palestine Government, the Director of the Customs and the port police. The two cases are being closely watched by hundreds of other Patria survivors who plan to file similar claims if these cases are decided in the refugees’ favor.
