Two teenage youths were under arrest here today on charges of having desecrated Jewish cemeteries in this area. The youths, whose names were not disclosed, are 16 and 17 years of age. They were picked up by state police after the Workmen’s Circle Cemetery was desecrated for a second time in two weeks, and a cemetery belonging to Temple Israel was also vandalized.
The first incident occurred two weeks ago, when 14 gravestones were overturned in the Workmen’s Circle burial grounds. After the tombstones were restored last week, the cemetery caretaker found eight additional gravestones overturned. The police were also notified of a similar desecration in the Temple Israel cemetery. It is believed that others were involved in the incidents, in addition to the two youths under arrest.
