Leon Itzkar and Enicu Cohn, representatives in Rumania of the Jewish National Fund and the Keren Hayesod, were today sentenced to four months’ imprisonment each and were fined a total of $500,000 by a Bucharest court which found them guilty of violating currency regulations in connection with fund-raising activities which they conducted in this country in behalf of the Zionist funds.
The defendants will not serve the prison terms since they have already been detained more than four months. Last month the Rumanian Finance Ministry withdrew charges of alleged violations of currency regulations against the two men, but they were still accused on secondary charges of tax evasion. The Zionist officials, who were arrested last October, were released from prison on May 16.
