The Union of American Hebrew Congregations is setting up regional offices throughout the country to “bring Reform Judaism into the life of every unaffiliated American Jew,” Rabbi Maucice Eisendrath, president of the UAHC, yesterday told the first meeting of congregation presidents called by the Union.
The meeting adopted resolutions urging greater lay participation in congregational life, smaller and more personal synagogues and the development of new congregations to reach the unaffiliated. Special stress was laid on continued contact with congregation members during the summer months, either personally or through mailed literature, such as sermonettes and Bible lessons.
The congregation presidents participated during the week-end in a dinner, attended by 500 promiment Christian and Jewish lay and religious leaders, honoring Dr. Julian Morgenstern, retiring president of the Hebrew Union College, which is affiliated with the UAHC. It was announced that a Julian Morgenstern Bible Chair was being established at the college to honor the former head, who will continue to teach classes in the Bible.
