The United Jewish Appeal since January 1 of this year has aided close to 460, 000 needy Jews in Israel, Europe, Moslem lands and the United States, and has helped Israel add another 100,000 acres to its cultivated lands, 75, 000 of these in former wasteland reaches of the Negev, it was reported today by Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-chairman of the UJA.
Those receiving the aid, Dr. Schwartz reported, included 322,000 recent new-comers to Israel, 100,000 impoverished Jews in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Tangier, Iran and other Moslem lands, 30,000 distressed Jews in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, and 7,000 refugee new-comers to the United States.
This aid, covering a wide range of settlements welfare and rehabilitation services, Dr. Schwartz pointed out, was administered by the Appeal’s constituent agencies, the United Israel Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee and United Service for New American.
