The formation of a non-sectarian group “to enlist the support of all Americans regardless of creed for the destitute remnant of the Jews overseas,” was announced here today by Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the 1946 campaign of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York. The committee will be headed by Nelson A. Rockefeller.
The organization of the committee was prompted by the desire of many non-Jews to take an active part in the campaign to help refugees and displaced Jews, Mr. Warburg said, adding that “they felt very strongly that this effort is not for Jews alone, that all mankind must share the responsibility for saving the surviving Jews overseas.”
Mr. Rockefeller pointed out that the underprivileged of the whole world looked to America for help. “We have just finished a long and costly war against Nazism,” he declared, “however, if a single additional Jewish life is lost, then Hitler has gained another victory.”
