More than 1,200 outstanding Jewish community leaders from all parts of the country gathered here today for the three-day annual national conference of the United Jewish Appeal which starts tomorrow at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
The delegates will set the UJA goal for 1954 and evaluate the results of the 1953 campaign. They will hear special reports on the recent economic meeting held in Jerusalem between leaders of American and overseas Jewish communities and the leaders of Israel.
At the opening session tomorrow budgets for the coming year amounting to $119,921,150 will be presented by the United Israel Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee, and the United Service for New Americans–the three constituent agencies of the UJA. Of this sum, about 86 percent is earmarked for work in Israel.
Principal speakers at the conference will include Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Israel Finance Minister Levi Eshkol, Israel Ambassador Abba S. Eban, Governor John S. Fine of Pennsylvania, Jewish Agency chairman Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Washington economist Leon Keyserling, UJA national chairman Edward M.M. Warburg, Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, and other noted personalities.
