An urgent plea from Dr. Dov Joseph, treasurer of the Jewish Agency, for help in establishing “their personal day of independence” for thousands of unabsorbed immigrants in Israel was relayed today to the American Jewish community by Samuel H. Daroff of Philadelphia, National Cash Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal.
Dr. Joseph’s plea was made in a message cabled from Jerusalem to Mr. Daroff citing the desperate need for cash to speed the real integration of scores of thousands of newcomers into the creative life of Israel. Mr. Daroff, who recently accepted his new post in addition to serving as a UJA national chairman, already has pressed ahead with an intensive nation-wide drive to bring in $40,000,000 in cash before June 24th, the day the UJA Anniversary Conference opens in Jerusalem.
Dr. Josephs cable to Mr. Daroff said: “All Israel is rejoicing and celebrating its independence. But for 120,000 in Maabaroth huts who have been waiting for five and six years for homes and the tens of thousands in agricultural settlements who have been left for several years without livestock and farm equipment because we lack funds, their personal day of independence has not yet arrived. American Jewry can help spread the absorption of these newcomers and provide for the steady and continuing influx of new immigrants by making the current cash campaign a success.”
