Paying tribute to South African Jewry as one of the staunchest Zionist communities in the Diaspora, Rabbi Herbert Friedman, executive vice chairman of the United Jewish Appeal in the United States, last night evoked an enthusiastic response of a large audience attending a dinner here launching this year’s countrywide Israel United Appeal Campaign.
Rabbi Friedman, who arrived here from Israel, reported on the current situation there, stressing the Jewish Agency’s need for maximum resources for an accelerated housing program. Other speakers included Simcha Pratt, Israel’s Minister to South Africa and Harry Trope, national chairman of the Israel United Appeal.
