A recent spurt in cash collections by the United Jewish Appeal has resulted in the realization of a mid-year cash total of $33,500,000, it was announced today by Israel D. Fink, UJA national cash chairman. This represents an increase of $1,500,000 over the first half-year collections in 1960, according to Mr, Fink.
“This clear gain over last year, ” Mr. Fink declared, “is a most heartening development. Less than two weeks ago, indications were that we would barely match our 1960 total. The recent spurt in collecting cash against campaign pledges reflects a six percent increase in communities both large and small throughout the country, and indicates that, with a sustained effort through the rest of the year, we will meet our full 1961 cash goal.”
The all-out spring collection drive, led by Mr, Fink, was launched on April 22 in connection with the State of Israel’s Bar Mitzvah anniversary. It was, he noted, “significantly spurred by late May reports of sharply increasing cash needs facing UJA’ s overseas member agencies, the Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency,” These needs, based on new factors governing the rate and pattern of Jewish immigration, were reported to the 54-member UJA national cash committee on a nationwide telephone hookup, in which Mr. Fink was joined by Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice-chairman, and Charles H. Jordan, JDC overseas director-general.
