The millions of dollars raised by American Jewry through the United Jewish Appeal have enabled the European Jewish communities to make a miraculous recovery from the catastrophe of the Hitler era, Charles Jordan, overseas director of the American Joint Distribution Committee, declared here last night. Mr. Jordan spoke at a dinner honoring 80 members of a UJA mission from the United States.
The JDC official pointed out that the number of Jews receiving direct relief has been reduced from 750,000 to 58,000. Mr. Jordan said that the Jews in Vienna shared in this recovery. If they were not yet an independent community, he said, they were well on the way to self-sufficiency. Other speakers included the Austrian Minister of Interior Josef Afritsch and Yeheskiel Sahar, Israel’s Minister to Austria.
The UJA mission will proceed to Israel tomorrow to continue a survey of UJA-sponsored program requirements. The members of the mission will be joined in Israel by about 30 other members who left the United States for Israel direct.
The Study Mission will make a full report on its survey to the 22nd annual national conference of the UJA next month in New York City’s Statler Hilton Hotel. Their findings will play a decisive role in determining the 1960 UJA campaign objectives, which will be formulated at the conference.
