More than $17,000,000 have been raised to date by the Greater New York campaign of the United Jewish Appeal for 1957, it was announced today at a farewell luncheon for Robert Briscoe, Dublin’s first Jewish mayor who is returning to Ireland next week. Mayor Robert F. Wager, of New York, who attended the function, officially proclaimed this month “United Jewish Appeal Month” in New York City.

William Rosenwald, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, for which Mayor Briscoe has been making a cross-country speaking tour, presented him as a token of appreciation a 2.000 year-old glass bowl recently excavated in the Judean Hills in Israel. Summing up his impressions, Mayor Briscoe expressed admiration for the support of American Jewry for the UJA nationwide $100,000,000 Emergency Rescue Fund and regular 1957 campaign.

Monroe Goldwater, president of the UJA of Greater New York, noted that a few months ago it had been anticipated that 100,000 Jews would seek haven during 1957 but that the rate of immigration has been rising so rapidly that 15,000 refugees entered Israel alone during April. He stressed the importance of UJA Month activities in keeping pace with the immigration increase which is outstripping the original estimate on which the decision for the Emergency Rescue Fund was based.
