The sum of $35,000,000 was contributed in cash within the last two weeks to the United Jewish Appeal for the purpose of meeting critical defense needs in Palestine and rehabilitation, needs of Jews in Europe, it was announced last night by Henry Morgentahu Jr., general chairman of the U.J.A.
The announcement was made following a meeting of the U.J.A. administrative committee at the Biltmore Hotel at which Mr. Morgenthau said that cash contributions to meet the emergency developments in Palestine would reach the $50,000,000 mark by the early part of nest week.
The former Secretary of the Treasury reported that New York City has already made available $4,000,000 in cash and has pledged several millions more within the sit few days, while Los Angeles has pledged $3,000,000 to the emergency drive and as already remitted in cash $2,441,017. Joseph G. Lampl, co-chairman of the Jewish 33fare Fund of Cleveland, presented a check for $2,000,000 as an initial payment on as sum which the Cleveland community has undertaken to raiseThe Jewish community f Philadelphia, where the drive for the United Jewish Appeal is just getting underway, has responded to the dramatic plea for cash with a check for $1,900,000.
Mr. Morgenthau revealed that the following communities have remitted in i8h $1,000,000 or more: Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Detroit, Boston arid Pittsburgh. Warning that the “action of the Arabs “backed up by Great Britain will bring about the failure of the United Nations,” he said: “I, for one, cannot and will not “believe that President Truman and General Marshall, having shown such courageous and wise leadership in regard to Palestine, will not insist that the United Nations implement their own action in whatever form necessary.”
Mrs. Goldie Meirson, Jewish Agency leader, who came to the United States six ago to accelerate the pane of the U.J.A. drive to provide urgently needed cash Sources for the program of security in “behalf of the Jews in Palestine, emphasized at the “700,000 Jews in Palestine are fighting a war of survival–a war which was of their choosing, but which they must fight to a victorious end to save their a lives and homes as well as to safeguard the rights of the homeless Jews of Europe find a home in the Jewish state in the Palestine future.” The United Jewish peal, she said, must supply the Jews in Palestine with funds for “freedom and defense.”
