More than $450,000 was contributed here yesterday for the United Jewish Appeal as communities in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Eastern Ohio answered an urgent nationwide plea by the UJA for a special $25,000,000 fund. The tri-state conference was attended by more than 400 community leaders.
Reuven Dafni, Consul in charge of the Israel Office of Information in New York, told the conference that in the months ahead UJA funds can help irrigate another 37, 500 acres of arid land and establish 40 new farm villages to an initial refugee population of 16,000 persons. In addition, he said, UJA funds can help build 10,000 new homes for a minimum of 40,000 recent newcomers and can provide medical care and job training for 10,000 immigrants who are either handicapped or aged.
Judge Samuel A. Weiss of Pittsburgh, UJA tri-state chairman, called on the delegates to “back up the people of Israel with cash.” He pointed out that the UJA’s cash drive is also aimed at providing urgently needed welfare and rehabilitation aid for 180,000 men, women and children in European and Moslem lands “who have no other source of help but us.”
