The United Jewish Appeal will initiate the opening phases of its $100,000,000 Emergency Rescue Fund and its regular 1957 campaign this Saturday with a dinner honoring Samuel D. Leidesdorf, veteran Jewish leader, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. It is expected that contributions at the dinner will set the pattern for a campaign of the magnitude of the 1957 Appeal.
The $100,000,000 Emergency Rescue Fund is to be used to save, transport and resettle in Israel, the United States and other free world countries about 100,000 new Jewish refugees coming primarily from Egypt and Hungary. The regular 1957 campaign will seek to raise the funds needed to carry out the regular programs affecting the well-being of 525,000 Jewish men, women and children in various parts of the world, including Israel. Newly-elected United States Senator Jacob K. Javits will be the principal speaker at the dinner, at which awards will also be made to leaders of the successful 1956 UJA campaign.
