U.J.A. Survey Mission Tours Negev Mines, Visits Elath Port

The 100-man United Jewish Appeal Study Mission today visited Elath and the area surrounding Israel’s Red Sea port They were accompanied by Development Minister I. Bentov, who described the development projects planned for the southern Negev and Elath.

Later the UJA leaders visited the Timuah mines, also known as King Solomon’s mines. Joseph Baratz of Degania, who entertained the group at a luncheon at the Soldiers House in Elath, was host.

Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, announced the appointment today of Louis D. Horwitz as director general of Malban, succeeding Charles Passman, who will continue with Malben in a consulting capacity.

Mr. Warburg also said the world budget for the JDC has been set at $32 million, half of which will go to Malben institutions in Israel. He said the call on world Jewry to provide help would be greater this year because of the increased needs.
